People that were born here but don't consider themselves English.

I was watching a programme on the BBC about the Irish coming to Birmingham in the 50s, it was an interesting programme until the lady presenting the programme declared herself Irish.

She was born in Birmingham, her parents were born in Birmingham...... Therefore like it or not you are English.

She said she loved Boyzone when she was growing up because they were Irish and River dance enthralled her.

Sorry Love but you are English.

Why do some cultures insist on denying they are English despite being born here and in a lot of cases their parents were also born here?

I would also like to add I think the Irish have a right to hold a grudge, just not against the average English person most of us were treated just as terribly historically probably for longer and most of it wasn’t recorded due to the church and landowners being the only ones to be able to use a pen, plus the small factor of my family mix being made up of all the British Isles so I have plenty of ‘Celt’ blood.

This may be why some Irish people with a grudge still come over here to moan as they know it isn’t us that they have the actual grudge with.

We was all fucked over and to a point still are the only difference is Ireland like the other Celtic nations spent most of it dealing with tribal infighting which left England at an advantage to take over and secure it’s own defences.

Horrible thing were done by he English but always during the ENGLISH ‘peasants’ having cruelty as a daily part of their lives.

Let’s not kid ourselves it was the Irish that suffered the most hence a load of us fucking off to make new lives in the USA on a wooden sail ship.

The "Coming here for work" was a valid reason at the start of the industrial revolution, and for about the following century; it solved two problems - it got the unemployed out of a nation that couldn't afford them, and into work in a nation that could afford to build the infrastructure to employ them.

Now it just drains the talent from donor nations - talent they need themselves to get to the point where there is adequate local employment opportunities for it's people, and, by default a higher tax take to enable the development of a modern infrastructure.

You can't blame people for wanting to better themselves; it's one of the main tenets of being able to take on more personal responsibility; it's the system that encourages people to emigrate to seek that improvement that is fucked.

Why come here? Ireland is a small country and was probably the poorest country in Western Europe for many years. People came here to work. England is a much bigger country and has alot more opportunities the same applies today. Also this Country needes people to build Roads, Hospitals etc etc

Obviously there is some anti England feeling in Ireland the same as in Wales and Scotland. The last 800 years England/Britain has fucked over Ireland it's not really a surprise is it?

That said you shouldn't slag off the country you live

I, too, find all this ancestry fascinating; Traced my father's side back to the early 1600s and my mother's side to the early 1800s.

On my mother's side, the information would have been recorded in a family bible which, unfortunately as she was not the eldest of her generation, didn't pass down through her to my eldest brother. last I heard it was in the hands of a limp-wristed cousin of mine who was Professor of Sweaty at some Scottish university (probably long since retired or even dead as he was a good 12 years older than me).

A downside was that we'd long since believed that my father's family originated from landed gentry in Hainult (the one what is now in Belgium, not the sink estate), but turns out the tree passes through a family of farm labourers in Oxfordshire.

To counter that, I found a branch of the family from Jamaica - the joy of finding that little gem out caused my kids to spend a day or two speaking in a style Jim Davison would have been proud of.

So, there we have it. The root of all racism in the world can be placed on my doorstep.

I love finding connections which you would never have known until you start digging.
Gank and I have strikingly similar surnames in our family tree all hailing from the same places in Ireland. I've yet to connect the dots as it is probably through a haystack of cousins.

The Irish are a funny bunch. I have no doubt my dad was brainwashed by the system over there to hate the English.
I can understand a little re: famine etc....but as you say, why come here?
Also, that same system destroyed his childhood and I know at the very least he suffered from a great deal of physical abuse by the Christian Brothers who schooled him.
He received a payout from the Irish government about a decade ago. I don't know how much he got, but he has lived comfortably ever since without needing to work.

My British passport expired in 2009 and i never renewed it, so each time i visit the UK its as an Aussie, on one visit at Heathrow the immigation woman asked me what i was going to do in the UK, i said im English here to see my Family etc, she held up my passport and said not according to this your not.

Turns out she was just having a laugh with me, but for a split second it was WTF moment.....

On the flip side of this there were/are many many English people born all over the world in various parts of the empire who wouldn’t dream of thinking of themselves as anything but British.

I used to be a bit militant about this and still feel a little strongly to some extent.

If you are born in an NHS hospital, on an English council estate (speaking for self), in an English school system. You are English.

A service has been provided to you, to develop you and help you thrive.

My Dad is very republican Irish and this argument became a battleground for us.
Rather poetically for him, I recently did my DNA test and I've adopted more of his Irish DNA than my submissive, compliant siblings.(Daddy's boys and girls)
Quite devastating for my mother who is my best mate and as close to pure english as you can get.

Nowadays, I've developed an obsession with genealogy and social history. That has softened my view on borders/nationalism.
I think there's more division in class in honesty.

My family on all lines is largely working class.
We even have a close named after us in Barking in Creekmouth. Family of 17 kids growing up in a sinking town. (Now Sedge Gardens)
However, I did manage to link us back to Francis Walsinghan which made be pleased as punch. The ultimate spy master and mastermind behind this nations greatest monarch.

I'm also a distant cousin of Saiorse Ronan.
I am very proud of this although I have never met her. She does not know I exist.

On the ancestry, if anybody needs help in starting the family tree, let me know. Very happy to help.😊

I don't have an issue with people born in England but who have parents born elsewhere and want to indentify with their parents place of birth.

What I can't stand is the ones that grow up hating the place of their birth despite probably having a decent childhood, prospects to get a job, buy a house, have English friends and bring up their kids in that same country.

There's the reality twoleftfeet.
A lot of British people are growing up hating Britain for its colonial past and work to end that. I include lots of Labour politicians in that. Diane Abbott, David Lammy, Dawn Butler and so on.

They talk of 'white privilege' and regularly race bait on Twitter etc. The truth is they aren't British in spite of what it say s on their passports. They grow up hating Britain because of our forefather's building an Empire that permits them to become British but it is in their DNA to revolt against Britain...

Shame that Britain is fucked now...
